The Lebanon Mine Action Center in collaboration with the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organized a workshop on " Mine Action Terminologies and Definitions in Arabic " for three days from 18 to 20 February, 2014 , at the Central Military Club in Beirut , Lebanon. Representatives of the Arabic-speaking countries affected by landmines, cluster munitions and other remnants of war (ERW) from both current and past conflicts attended the workshop (Egypt , Yemen , Jordan , Iraq , Libya and Lebanon) .
The glossary of terms and definitions (IMAS 04.10) and the results of the survey of the needs to standardize terminologies are the basis for the workshop’s discussions. The workshop aimed to translate the terminology and definitions in the International Standards for Mine Action (IMAS) into Arabic and to improve knowledge, exchange experiences and promote best mine action practices throughout the Arabic-speaking countries affected by landmines, cluster munitions and other remnants of war (ERW).
In the framework of the workshop, the Geneva delegation conducted field visits to DCA teams operating in Bsous village- Aley and visited as well the regional humanitarian demining school in Hammana.
At the end of the workshop, attendees unanimously decided to disseminate and adopt the Arabic Translation stressing on the necessity to organize similar workshops in Arab countries for a continuous follow-up.
On this occasion, LMAC Director presented a small token of appreciation to the GICHD assistant as well as gifts for the delegation.
